Corporate Champions: CancerCare Manitoba "Surgical Oncology - Colorectal"
Sometimes a little friendly competition is all you need to get motivated. CancerCare Manitoba's 'Surgical Oncology - Colorectal' team has graciously accepted the challenge of the 20K Challenge for Life, spurred on by fellow competitors from the Manitoba Blood and Marrow Transplant Program's 'Team Transplant'.
Undaunted and up to the task, Dr. Debrah Wirtzfeld is leading the 'Surgical Oncology - Colorectal' team and has already recruited 12 members, including surgeons and oncology staff. "Our goal is 25," she says, with a fundraising goal of $1,000 per team member. "We have already received the first $1,000 donation," she adds proudly, and says individual donations will be the team's primary source of fundraising. The first of two bake sales has raised over $600.00. A yard sale, poker night and 'Bud, Spud and Steak' night are also in the works!
In terms of the team's activities toward meeting its fitness and lifestyle goals, that's still a work-in-progress, says Dr. Wirtzfeld.
The 'Surgical Oncology - Colorectal' team will rise not only to the fundraising challenge set out by Team Transplant, but more importantly to support CancerCare Manitoba patients and their families, especially those living with colorectal cancer.
The Challenge for Life event is one of two major initiatives to raise money through the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation in support of cancer research. A gala dinner is planned for March 2011 to raise awareness of Colorectal Cancer.
